On a sunny Sunday morning, there was a real buzz around the North Plaza pitch as team GB, Japan, and the Rest of the World looked to wrestle the DBDB Country of Origin Title away from the defending champions South Africa.
Each team was placed into a bracket-style tournament, where teams would play each other throughout multiple games.
The 7 minutes games were high-paced, skilled, and intense. Team GB were the early tournament favorites and hit the ground running, beating defending champions South Africa in the opening game and going undefeated through to the final.
The dark horses of the tournament, The Rest of the World played quietly under the radar beating the highly talented and fast-paced Japan team in their opening game and only losing to Team GB on the way to the final.
After the final bracket games, the finals lined up as follows:
3rd/4th Playoff: Japan v South Africa
Final: GB v The Rest of the World
There was an extra twist for the finals as each game was played over two halves of 6 minutes, testing the players in the hot and humid conditions.
The 3rd and 4th playoff games were all about pride. The game was close. Japan scored early, but South Africa showed a never die attitude leveling the game just before halftime. After lots of back and forths and no team taking control, Japan's experience proved the difference by scoring two late tries to claim 3rd place.
The final saw the two best teams come together for one last showdown. Team GB took the early ascendancy, scoring first and looking sharp. The Rest of the World defended well and worked themselves back into the game. The 2nd half was action-packed, with both teams going back and forth and not giving an inch. Team GB managed to break the Rest of the World's defense late on, scoring a try on the outside and claiming the title.
The finals standings were as follows:
Champions: Team GB
2nd: The Rest of the World
3rd Japan
4th: South Africa.
Well Done to Team GB for winning the DBDB Country of Origin title! The games were fast, intense, and played in a great spirit. Shout out to Jeremy Nicholls of Team GB who was MVP of the tournament.
