Padel

Updated: Jul 26, 2023

Padel, sometimes known as Padel Tennis, is a racquet sport of Mexican origin. It's the fastest-growing sport in the world, played in over 90 countries and by more than 18 million people, and is a game for all ages.

Played in doubles and on an enclosed court, it's a cross between tennis and squash, where the ball can bounce once off the glass wall and metallic mesh fence. A sport not dominated by strength, technique, and serve like tennis, it is an excellent game for men, women, and youth to compete in together.

After my morning workout on Friday, I joined my brother and cousins for a game of Padel in Claremont. I have seen a few clips of Padel on social media and was intrigued by the game and looking forward to giving the game a go.

Arriving at Africa Padel in Claremont, I was impressed by the facilities and energy around the club. With 7 courts, a restaurant, and rental facilities, everyone smiles and enjoys its great venue and sport. The game brings people together.

My brother and I had a friendly bet between our two cousins from Australia, who were convinced that their youth would be enough to take down experience.

Padel rules are similar to that of tennis, but you serve underarm. Scoring is the same - points, games, sets, and tie breaks separate teams when tied at 6-6. Not that it was needed, as experience proved to be the difference when playing our more youthful counterparts.

There is more to the game than hitting the ball over the net. You can use the walls because the game combines tennis and squash. This allows for great rallies, and you can either let the ball bounce off the wall or play it on the volley.

Once you get the rallies, the action is fast-paced and constantly moving. You will be surprised by the sweat you work up. But there's no better feeling than playing hard with a smile.

Despite the friendly rivalry between cousins, we had a great time. Thats what Padel is all about. It's a game of enjoyment and fair play, and there is no better feeling than being part of a fast-growing sport.

I’m looking forward to our Thursday night game before returning to Hong Kong. Hopefully, a Padel court will be back home to continue playing this great game.
