Kite Surfing originated in 1977, and has turned into a modern-day sport enjoyed by many people all over the world.
I had the opportunity to meet with Discovery Bay residents Justin Visser and Megan du Plessis to find out more about kitesurfing.
Originally from South Africa, Justin and Megan have been involved in kite surfing for over ten years and are the owners of Obsession Kiting. They are passionate about the ocean and the lifestyle it represents.
They describe kite surfing as an achievable extreme sport that will challenge and give you a sense of accomplishment.
Compared to other Ocean sports they believe that no matter your level of experience, you are learning as the sport evolves.
Encouraged by a friend to pursue the passion, Obsession Kiting offers kitesurfing lessons for beginners, refresher courses, and foiling lessons.
Foiling allows kite surfers to ride on the surface of the water with minimal drag.
Following the International Kiteboarding Organization curriculum, Obsession Kiting lessons take place at Pui O beach during the summer and Shu Hau Wan during the winter.
For any beginners wondering what your first few lessons will entail, it will be one of discovery. They will take you through the safety checkpoints of kite surfing, how to pack and set up your kite, launching, landing and how to quickly release and depower your kite.
They will meet on your level and continue to work with you on your kite surfing journey.
Over the last year, Obsession Kiting has joined Airush as a distribution partner. Airush is a proudly South African brand that focuses on designing eco-friendly products.
By partnering with Airush, Obsession kiting will be able to assist riders with equipment and gear that is suitable to their needs.

As Obsession kiting continues to grow, Justin and Megan want to continue to promote the sport, run International kite surfing camps around the Asian region and expand and make Airush more visible and accessible in Asia.
