Maharlikans Rugby

When you think about Rugby, the first teams that come to mind are the All Blacks, Springboks, England, Wallabies, France, Ireland, and Scotland. However, the game has grown and evolved over the past 15 years. New countries like Japan, Georga, Fiji, and Portugal have emerged as rugby nations, adding a new layer of intrigue to this global game.

In Asia, Rugby's growth is not just a trend but a powerful force shaping the region. The sport's influence is palpable, particularly in developing and progressing Asian countries, showcasing its potential and impact.

Since its establishment in the UK in 2021, Maharlikans Rugby Club has experienced a meteoric rise, with chapters now spanning the UK, North America, New Zealand, Australia, and the Philippines. This rapid growth is a testament to the club's vibrant and dynamic community.

The club has achieved significant milestones, from rapid expansion to impacting the Rugby community. These achievements are a source of pride for all our members, making them feel part of a thriving team. We've come a long way, and we're just getting started.

Maharlikan, from Pre-Hispanic Tagalog, loosely translates to "Free man." The club's mission is to showcase Philippine rugby and unite Filipinos abroad who play and share a passion for rugby. The club is more than just a team. It's a family that fosters a sense of belonging and makes each member feel included and valued.

The club has links with the Philippines Rugby Union. It acts as a pathway into the Philippines Rugby Team, which has seen some club members go on and represent the Philippines Rugby while living and playing Rugby abroad.

This year, Rob Forgerty established the HK Maharilikans Chapter. With the Philippines being very close to Hong Kong, many Filipino players are playing for teams across Hong Kong Rugby Leagues.

Since the club was established, 25 Filipino rugby players have joined the club and are proud to represent and play under the Maharlikans badge.

Training takes place on Sundays at Happy Valley, with a dinner after allowing players to bond and get to know each other better.

Staying true to the club's values and mission, the HK Maharilikans will be heading to Manila from the 26 - 28 July to play in 2 7's games in Muntinlupa Manila against 2 of the best teams in the Philippines, Alabang Eagles and Manila Nomads.

These games will test their skills and an excellent opportunity to showcase their talent and represent the club on an international stage.

The opportunity to play in the Phillipeans gives many HK Filipino rugby players a chance to play in front of the Phillipeans Rugby Union, as many players are working towards playing in the National Team.

Just as they are excited to play the games, the team also looks forward to off-the-pitch celebrations and bonding with other teams.

As the team prepares for their games this weekend, they would like to thank Impact Prowear for providing playing and training kits and after-match polos, Green Clean, Endorphin, DB Dad Bods, and RAW PT for their support.

Looking into the future, the club would like to encourage Filipino Rugby players across SEA and the UK to reach out to the following chapters:

  • Hong Kong: @hk_maharlikans_rugby

  • UK: @uk_maharlikans_rugby

  • USA: @usamaharlikans

  • USA Womens: @magandaquins_7s

  • Australia: @aussiemaharlika7s

  • NZL: @maharlikansnz

So that they can continue to grow and unite Filipinos abroad with the beautiful game of Rugby.
