Played by over 20 million people, Netball is an exciting sport that is fast-paced and skilled. It is an exceptional sport that develops hand-eye coordination, strength, stamina, and flexibility.
Like many team sports, netball builds confidence, develops teamwork, makes long-lasting friendships, and allows you to feel a sense of community.
The DB Pirates Netball offers a structured and comprehensive netball program for players of all ages and abilities.
Sam Lewis is the DB Pirates Head of Netball and has been a member of the DB Pirates Netball for eight seasons. She started playing netball at the age of eight and has played in ladies' leagues across the UK.
The DB Pirates Netball program is structured into three sections :
Netta's - u10
Juniors - u12 - u19
Ladies
The Nettas and Junior program focuses on the development and fundamental skills. Training for Juniors takes place once a week and Junior matches on a Saturday.
Players that show potential in the Junior teams will have the opportunity to play in Ladies' teams. Sam mentions it gives young players a chance to develop their skills and allows them to make a smooth transition from Juniors to Ladies.
This philosophy and opportunity given to the Junior players have seen six players selected to represent Hong Kong in 2021. What a fantastic achievement and one that we should be proud of as a sporting community.
The Ladies' teams have a strong representation in the Hong Kong Netball Leagues. With five teams playing across all divisions, three DB Pirates Netball teams gained promotion at the end of last season.
What makes the ladies different from many teams around Hong Kong is that all teams train together. It allows young and new players to learn and socialize with experienced players and creates camaraderie and team spirit among all players involved.
Training sessions take place once a week with matches on a Monday evening.
Covid has had a huge effect on all sports in Hong Kong, but as the season draws near Sam is positive and hopeful that all DB Pirates Netball teams will play a full season.
She encourages anyone interested in playing Netball, whether you are a beginner or an ex-player, to come down to the Netball taster session for ladies players on the 27 August and 3rd September at Discovery College from 9:00 - 10:30. There is a spot for everyone on the team and, once you try you won't want to leave.
